For many local businesses in Cyprus, Google Maps can be one of the first places a potential customer discovers them.

A search for “barber near me”, “real estate agency Limassol” or “restaurant Nicosia” can put several businesses in front of the customer before they ever visit a website.

So why does one business appear above another?

Google says local results are mainly determined by three factors: relevance, distance and prominence.

Understanding those three factors is much more useful than chasing supposed Google Maps “hacks”.

01Make It Clear What Your Business Actually Does

Relevance is about how closely your business matches the customer's search.

Start with the basics of your Google Business Profile:

  • choose the most accurate primary business category;
  • complete your services;
  • keep your opening hours accurate;
  • use the correct address or service area;
  • add useful business information;
  • keep your profile verified and up to date.

Your primary category is particularly important. Google recommends choosing the most specific category that accurately describes the business rather than adding categories simply because they contain useful keywords.

The same applies to your business name. Adding something like “Best Estate Agent Limassol Cyprus Properties” when that is not your real business name is not optimisation. Google requires the name to represent how the business is actually presented in the real world.

02You Cannot Optimise Away Distance

Distance is the factor businesses have the least control over.

If someone searches for a service in Limassol, Google considers how far potential businesses are from that person or from the location included in the search.

That means a business cannot realistically expect to dominate every city in Cyprus simply by adding Limassol, Nicosia, Larnaca and Paphos everywhere on its profile.

Instead, focus on becoming highly relevant and trusted in the locations you genuinely serve.

Your location still matters.

Local SEO can improve visibility, but it cannot make a business physically closer to the person searching. Build strong local relevance where your business genuinely operates.

03Build Prominence Beyond Google Maps

Your Google Business Profile does not exist in isolation.

Google says prominence can be influenced by information it finds across the web, including links to your business, your position in web search and your reviews.

This is why your website matters to Google Maps SEO too.

A strong local business website should clearly communicate:

  • what you offer;
  • where you operate;
  • individual important services;
  • accurate business details;
  • useful information related to what customers actually search for.

Google can also use publicly available information from your website when building and understanding Business Profiles.

Google Maps optimisation and website SEO should therefore support each other rather than being treated as completely separate strategies.

04Make Reviews Part of the Customer Journey

Reviews are another important part of prominence.

Google explicitly states that more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking.

But the objective should not be to collect as many reviews as possible overnight.

Create a simple process for asking genuine customers after a real interaction: a direct review link, QR code, follow-up email or message can remove unnecessary friction.

Google supports review links and QR codes, but offering discounts, free products or other incentives in exchange for reviews violates its policies.

The best review strategy is usually the simplest one:

make it easy for real customers to share real experiences.

05Ranking Higher on Google Maps Is Not One Setting

There is no button that moves a Cyprus business to position one on Google Maps.

A stronger local presence comes from several signals working together: an accurate Google Business Profile, the right categories and services, genuine reviews, a locally relevant website and a business that Google can understand and trust.

And because distance changes depending on who is searching, your position will not necessarily be identical for every person or every location.

The objective is not to trick Google Maps.

It is to make your business the clearest, most relevant and most trustworthy result when the right customer searches.
